English Whitby Jet Carved Bead Necklace Antique Victorian
A lovely carved Whitby jet bead necklace. Whitby jet can be found in many countries all over the world but the best quality jet comes from Whitby Bay in Yorkshire, England. Whitby jet was made popular as mourning jewellery by Queen Victoria herself as she took to wearing it with her mourning dress after the death of her husband Prince Albert in 1861. So popular was it that it was the only jewellery that was allowed to be worn in court at the time! This is a lovely example, beautifully carved. Good antique condition- a couple of beads have hairline cracks (please see photos) but look to have been glued so shouldn't come apart, this is to be expected in something of this age and fragility.. It shows it's been loved over the years!!
Measurements: Length (inc. clasp): 46 cm or 18.1 Inches. Diameter of largest bead: 2 cm or 0.8 Inches.
Weight: 53.1 g or 34.1 penny weight
