Fantastic enamel pendant fob with an heraldic crest to the centre attached to this 9ct yellow gold double alvert watch chain with English hallmarks & inscription dating it to the years just before World War I. Both chains graduate & in total the watch chain is long enough to convert into a fantastic curb link chain necklace.
The enamel shield apart from the colours is the Bradford County Borough Council with the following details with the explanation of the relevance of each just below.
Arms : Per pale Gules and Azure on a Chevron engrailed between three Bugle Horns stringed Or a Well Sable .
Crest : On a Wreath of the Colours a Boar's Head [sans tongue] erased Or in front of the Trunk of a Tree sprouting proper.
Supporters : On the dexter side a Ram Sable horned Or and gorged with a Wreath of White Roses proper and on the sinister side an Angola Goat Argent horned Or and gorged with a Collar Gules thereon three Roses also Argent.
Motto : 'LABOR OMNIA VINCIT' - Labour overcomes all things.
The arms were officially granted on October 18, 1847, supporters granted on December 31, 1907. The bugles recall the ancient and annual custom of blowing the horn and holding a dog on St. Martin's day in the forenoon, in the Market Place at Bradford. This commemorates part of the service which John Northrop of Manningham owed to John of Gaunt for his lands. The boar's head refers to the legend of the boar of Cliffe Wood. The black ram and white angora goat recall that the wool of these animal was used in the local industries. The roses refer to Yorkshire.
The English gold hallmark can be found to the rear of the fob, this is where you see the anchor for the Birmingham assay office along with the date letter for the year 1912. The rear of the fob is also inscribed with the years 1912-1913. The T bar is also marked with the anchor for Birmingham but there is no date letter. One dog clip clasp is marked '9 .375', the other clips marks are rubbed. All the links of the chain are marked '9' but again some of the marks are rubbed.
Both dog clip clasps are secure with good springs, 1 clip has a very slight thinning to the top please see the pictures.
