This Stunning & unusual brooch has a unique style with a Cabochon cut centre piece that is surrounded by 20 faceted cut Saphiret Glass Stones with 2 Mid hued blue Sapphires, one at each point. Saphiret glass was made in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia in the mid-19th century by mixing melted gold into sapphire-coloured glass, the result was a glass which looks brick red or brown, which flashes vivid electric blue when moved in the light. Generally the darker the colour the older the glass. Jewellery containing Saphiret dates to Victorian, Edwardian and towards the late years of the Arts & Crafts periods. Early in the 20th century manufacturing stopped due to the increase in the price of Gold making the glass no longer cost effective.
The Saphiret glass is in gilt metal, not marked. Has a good secure clasp but the pin is slightly misshapen and the brooch itself has a slight bend but the Saphiret glass itself is in beautiful order ( please see the pictures )
