Antique early 19th Century Superb Copper Etching of the Greek Goddess 'Demeter' (Goddess of fertility, agriculture and harvest) by noted French Artist, Print maker and engraver 'Jean Jaques Avril' (jean Jaques the Elder c1744 - c1831).

In Excellent and well preserved condition the engraving is produced on heavy gauge paper and mounted on cut card so as to complete within a desired frame for display.

Of a good size, the engraving itself measuring 15 x 10.5 inches and the total size including card mount being 24 x 19.5 inches.

The Engraving i signed to the bottom edge with the engravers namesake as well as title in french..

Jean Jaques Avril was a pupil of the renowned engraver Johann Georg Wille,  Avril was a prolific artist, known for producing a large number of engravings, some of significant size.

During his time Avril created approximately 540 engravings, many of which were reproductions of paintings by other famous artists, including: 
"The Consequences of War: Mars leaving for war" after Peter Paul Rubens
"Le Printemps" (Spring) after Carlo Maratti
"La Vierge au linge" after Raphael
"Diana and Actaeon" and "Diana and Callisto" after Albani
"Fishermen returning" and "The Shipwreck" after Claude-Joseph Vernet
"Combat of the Horatii and Curiatii" after Jean-Bernard Le Barbier 
His work is held in the collections of major institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Royal Academy of Arts.

 

The Engraving dates to around circa 1818.
