Saphiret Glass Cross Pendant Vintage Art Deco c1920

Rare fantastic large vintage base metal cross set with 6 saphiret glass stones dating from the Art Deco period. Saphiret glass is recognisable by the brick colour stones which reflect blue in the light, usually cut as a cabochon these stones contained in this cross are facetted.
Originally made in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia in the mid 19th century by mixing molten gold into sapphire colour glass which gives the distinct colours. Because they are glass, these stones are rarely found in precious metal findings which is the case with this cross.
