Old is not always gold

Unfortunately my 15 year old Volvo car is not worth more because its almost vintage. Nor is my telly, or indeed my beloved sofa, in fact darling blue is so last century.

Same unfortunately with antiques, this tea bowl is c1790 maybe a bit older, but these were hot goods in the 1970s and 1980s yes been in antiques trade along time. But all those collectors have passed on and sold up. Personally I have a house full of low value blue and white china, love it, enjoy it like a picture, but unlike pre 2000 when a rising investment not any longer. Life and houses are expensive. Homes generally are smaller, whilst antiques will go brilliantly into a brand new modern house.

As a rule collectors are not so active in market they prefer small high value rare items in good order. However the trendy decorative interior decoration market is in full swing, those with taste and half an eye can still replicate a unique and tasteful look in their homes very reasonably.

As buyers, one ought to be aware of being too trendy, industrial items were all in now some good losses to be had on resale, shabby chic white painted again came and went. Quoting antiques programs brown furniture so old hat, well brown sells and sells and always has a good solid period chest of drawers £200 to £300. Of course a really good one still can be £2000, but quality will always win through, up-cycling is fun and gives new life to items but the after life, resale will be harder, unless further use like a washing dolly tub, that makes a wonderful planter and will do for another 100 years, or a pig bench makes a perfect coffee table and will always do. Why because needed useful and practical. Really the keys words for antiques.
